Stone Texturs and Finishes

Natural Texture In Stones

natural slate

Natural finish / texture of stone as the name suggests, is naturally in the stones. This texture is the result of the natural clefts in the rocks. Nowadays natural textures are also manually made by imitating the natural patterns found on the stones.

The natural surface texture is achieved by slashing / ripping stone along its line of rift. The resulting texture is quite similar to the natural in both feel and appearance surface with great character. The surface comes with natural feel giving a very natural look.

Honed Texture / Finishes in Stones

Honed finish in stone is created by grinding / pulverizing a surface with high grit material to uniform its surface. While grinding the surface, care should be taken not to turn the surface into a reflective one. The stones with this type of texture are widely used in high traffic areas, walking surfaces, buildings, etc. The stones with a honed texture are porous in nature, thus should be protected through protective materials like stoneguard penetrating sealer. However, the colors of honed stones are not as vivid as those of polished stones.

Honed stone colors are not as vibrant as polished stones. Honed finishes, unlike polished finishes are not reflective. The honed finish is a satin smooth surface with little light reflection.Honed finishes are used in interior wall covering, exterior in warm environments, table tops, very light duty residential flooring, novelty items, etc.

Polished Texture / Finishes in Stones

Polished texture stones are quite glossy, reflection of polished crystals that bring out the brilliant colors and grains of natural stones.Polishing can be done only on crystallized stones and doesn't affect the porosity of the stone. Polished finish is quite popular as it enhances the colour and markings of the material. These stones are also nonporous in nature and available in various vibrant colors. The shiny surface of these stones is the result of polishing the crystals by polishing bricks and powders at the time of manufacturing, and not of any kind of shiny coating. But, the polished surface may also wear away in time due to heavy foot traffic, or can corrode owing to the use of improper chemicals for cleaning.

Polished finish stones are used in reception areas, where marble, granite and some harder limestones are laid. The most popular uses of polished stone are in interior and exterior wall cladding, interior and exterior paving, fireplace facing and hearth, lavatory tops, residential & commercial countertops, table tops, novelty items, many non-architectural uses such as tooth paste, paint whiting, agricultural lime, etc.

Flamed Finishes / Texture In Stones

Flamed texture is one of the quite rough surface. The roughness is due to the heating / bursting of the stone at extreme temperatures. Its an irregular textured finish. The flamed surface is very porous in nature, hence require stoneguard protection.

The flamed finish is a rough texture used frequently on floor tiles and vertical applications. Color and particulate or vein patterns vary from block to block. The major uses includes - chemistry and fire resistant work surfaces, fireplace facings & inner hearths, etc. where heat is an issue.

Tumbled Texture / Finishes in Stones

TTumbled texture stone is the outcome of tumbling different types of natural stones like marble, limestone, and granite. These three stones can be found with a tumbled texture almost effortlessly. Tumbled surface stones are perfectly suitable for those who prefer a classic appearance. The color of these stones is not so vibrant and requires the application of stone-color enhancer.

Sandblast Texture / Finishes in Stones

sandblasting is a technique to make stone texture / finish as Sandblasted. In this process, the pressurized flow of sand and water or coarse-grained grit is used for providing a matte gloss or sandblasted texture to the stone. The process of sandblasting is also used nowadays to engrave pictures and designs on the natural stone.

Bush Hammered Texture / Finishes in Stones

Bush hammered texture is created through a pounding action. The degree of roughness can be customized. The top surface of these stones is pneumatically tooled to produce a pitted or dimpled surface.

A pounding action that develops a textured surface. The top surface is pneumatically tooled to produce a pitted or grooved surface finish.

Sawn Texture / Finishes in Stones

Sawn surface is coarsely polished leaving a semi-smooth, regular finish. It is done by using a gang saw. Saw cut finish has acquired its name owing to the saw cuts that are made on the surface of stone. When the stones are broken free of the cut layer, they are shaped to uniform size. Saw Cut finish offers complimentary accent to other types of stone work. It is generally used for walls, gate entries, patios, landscape design applications, etc.
